An employment tribunal in the UK has ruled that ethical veganism is a philosophical belief and should be protected by law.

The ruling was made in the case of Jordi Casamitjana, who took an unfair dismissal case against his former employer, the League Against Cruel Sports.

He alleges that he was dismissed for his philosophical belief in ethical veganism after raising concerns that the league’s pension fund was being invested into companies involved in animal testing.

Ethical vegans

Ethical vegans are vegans who avoid all products that come from animals – not just foods. They will not use leather or wool, for example.

The tribunal ruling means that employers in the UK cannot discriminate against employees for their ethical veganism, in the same way as they cannot discriminate against people on the grounds of sex, race or disability.
