Clearance sales with complete dairy herds on offer are achieving a premium over surplus stock sales.

In general, the trade is upbeat with demand from a number of different sources such as new entrants, farms restocking after TB and expanding herds. Freshly calved heifers are making very good money, with a bottom of €1,250/head and up to €1,850/head.

In Corrin Mart in Cork last week there were good prices for quality young cows with older cows a more difficult trade.

At Corrin Mart last week Freeze Brand 2689, born February 2018, EBI €173, sold for €1,620. Freeze Brand 2630, born January 2018, EBI €124, sold for €1,660. Freeze brand 2714, born Feb 2018, EBI €151, sold for €1620. Freeze Brand 2740, born March 2018, EBI €74, sold for €1,660.

Top price in the small clearance sale was €1,800 for Lot 6, a 2016-born cow. A number of the other young cows in the clearance sale went for €1,600 and €1,700. The older cows (2011- and 2012-born) made between €670 and €800 each.

Three maiden heifers made €760, €720 and €700, while the Hereford stock bull made €2,180.

Other quality young cows in the normal dairy sale that took place after the clearance sale made good money also.

Last week

The previous week in Corrin saw a bigger clearance sale when 80 cows went under the hammer. On the day, 14 of the 80 cows on offer made over €2,000 and another 28 made between €1,700 and €2,000. There were 18 heifer calves sold and on average they made a very respectable €483 with a range from €370 to €630. Eight calves made over €500 each.

This freshly calved pedigree heifer, born February 2018, EBI €128, sold for €1,900.

There were 19 weanling heifers sold as part of the clearance and they averaged €935 each ranging from €1,050 back down to €820.

Kilkenny

In Kilkenny Mart there were 66 cows sold on 9 March and freshly calved cows made from €1,150/head to €1,700/head with heifers from €1,250/head to €1,850/head.

This freshly calved cow, born January 2014 sold for €1,620.

There are upcoming sales in Waterford Ross on Friday 20 March, and Nenagh on Wednesday 25 March. Auctioneer Denis Barrett is selling 62 in Carlow on Friday 20 March and Taaffe Auctions in Meath have a dispersal at Carnaross Mart on Thursday 2 April.
