Self-professed amateur droneographer Barry Grogan from Cashel, Co Tipperary filmed the winter barley harvest on his neighbour's farm using a DJI P2V+ drone and GoPro Hero 4 Black camera. The tractors seen in the video are a Claas Lexion 670 and a John Deere T660i.
Barry, a dairy farmer, got the drone (below) a few months ago and has found it very useful for these aerial shots. "It helps to show people all the hard work involved, the innovation and technology of the machinery and skill involved in bringing in the harvest," he says.
Barry thinks drones will be commonplace on tillage farms in a few years' time, but at the moment he warns that anyone with a drone as a toy/hobby should know they are very dangerous when it comes to cattle and horses. "I'm not sure if it's the sound (loud humming noise) or the sight of them. I tried flying it near the cows and they started running straight away so you have to be very careful. We also have broodmares at home and they are even more sensitive."
Winter barley harvest in Co Tipperary
Barry says the vast majority of the winter barley harvest is finished in his local area. "Contractors were very busy over the weekend with the bad weather forecast for this week. Yields were between 3.5t and 4t an acre but moisture levels were high. There were some very busy roads around here with grain and straw bales moving."
One contractor Barry spoke to planned to be almost finished last weekend and was moving on to the rapeseed.
