The last week has been marked by several tragic incidents on farms north and south of the border.

In the Republic of Ireland, a man in his 70s was killed on a farm in Co Galway on Sunday evening. The incident occurred in Kilconly, Tuam, and gardaí said a tractor was involved. It brings the total number of farm fatalities in the south this year to 11.

On Saturday evening, a male cyclist in his 60s was killed following a collision with a tractor the Church Road, Gowran, Co Kilkenny.

In Northern Ireland, a farmer in Derry died following an incident on his farm near the Coshquin Road on Monday 8 June just before 5pm.

Separately, another farmer was killed in an incident on the Madden Road area of Keady, Co Armagh on Saturday. It is understood a teleporter was involved in the incident. There have been three farm deaths in Northern Ireland this year.

In an effort to raise awareness of farm safety among young people, the ESB and Irish Farmers Journal supported by Agri Aware recently held a farm safety competition.

It was won by Jack Culleton with his ‘Know your zone, know the risk’ colour-coded risk assessment of his farm. The 12-year-old is an aspiring dairy farmer from Piltown, Co Kilkenny.
