The Department of Agriculture has extended the deadline for sowing wild bird cover.

Farmers participating in GLAS who have chosen the wild bird cover action now have until 16 June to sow this year’s crop.

The original deadline was 31 May, however, in a circular issued to GLAS advisors the extension was put in place to allow ground conditions to improve following the extremely wet spring.

“This extension applies solely to 2018 and all other requirements in relation to wild bird cover as set out in the scheme specifications must continue to be observed,” the Department circular stated.

This will be welcome news to farmers and contractors.

In the west some farmers say the area of ground where the wild bird cover is situated is still too wet to work. Up to now contractors have been focused on getting tillage crops sown and fertiliser spread.
