As temperatures soared across Ireland, fire crews in west Clare responded to a wildfire at Mount Callan, between Connolly and Miltown Malbay, on Tuesday morning at 10am.

Approximately 40ac of gorse were affected and it was not until 3pm that crews from Kilrush, Ennistymon and Ennis were able to bring the blaze under control. No cause has been given for the blaze.

In total, 27 fire personnel from the three stations were required to prevent the fire spreading to 60 acres of nearby forest. No property was damaged.

Warnings

The fire service has reiterated warnings that any outside burning can spread to private and State-owned forestry plantations and jeopardise the safety of dwellings and families living in rural areas. They also reminded landowners that the cutting, grubbing, burning or destruction of vegetation is prohibited from 1 March to 31 August.

A status orange warning for high fire risk expired on Wednesday morning having been in place for over a week.
