I spotted in the Dáil last week that Independent TD Mattie McGrath raised the issue of Sheep Welfare Scheme inspections.

Deputy McGrath said it was “ridiculous” that officials were insisting on carrying out inspections in light of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

He asked the Taosieach Micheál Martin to “call off the wolves” and consider using drones instead.

Martin quipped back that wolves “have not been reintroduced yet” but that he would follow up with Minister Charlie McConalogue about the inspections and drones.

“I am not aware of the potential for drones to monitor sheep on the headlands. Maybe the Department can explore that as well,” Martin said.

I’m not sure which thought is more frightening, drones watching from above, wolves roaming the hills, or a Department inspector knocking at the door.
