World’s second-largest importers of milk powder to visit Ireland
A delegation from Algeria is visiting Ireland this week to meet with key representatives from the Irish dairy sector, following a trade mission to north Africa last November.
The Irish dairy sector will meet with Algerian officials at a conference hosted by Enterprise Ireland in Dublin on Wednesday. The conference, entitled Creating opportunities for the Irish dairy industry in Algeria, will feature guest speaker Alastair McGuckian who founded Masstock and the Almerai Dairy plant in Saudi Arabia.
David Butler from Sustainable Food Systems Ireland and Graham Hamilton from Masstock Ireland will also be speaking.
Among the Algerian guests in attendance will be Fathi Messar from ONIL, Algeria’s dairy board. Through ONIL, Algeria imports vast quantities of milk to meet the national demand of 5.5 billion litres. ONIL manages strategic milk importation while also monitoring milk collection schemes and offering financial and technical assistance to companies to improve national production.

The aim of the visit is to leverage business opportunities for Irish suppliers to accommodate Algeria’s current import needs for milk powders while building their infrastructure and bovine industry.
