Agri Aware has launched a new webinar series called Dig In! for primary school students.
Dig In! is an educational resource that helps children learn about all things farming.
The new curriculum-linked webinar series called Fun Fridays will contain 10 episodes and run from October to December.
Fun Fridays is most suitable for children attending 1st to 6th class, but younger students are welcome to participate as well.
Topics included are dairy farming, the environment, farm safety, pigs and horses.
Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Martin Heydon attended the launch and commended Agri Aware’s “tireless work in ensuring all of our primary school students have the opportunity to learn about life on Irish farms”.
With Dig In! Learning about Life on the Farm and Countryside, Agri Aware dissects comprehensively topics like healthy eating, earth science, sustainability and CAP in an interactive way.
The webinar is broken down into four modules, with 20 lessons and corresponding activities for each module. Levels of ability are taken into account in the modules.
All lessons are then linked to the school curriculum by touching on subjects such as maths, art, English, drama and science.
Ultimately, all lessons will highlight the importance of the Irish agriculture business.
Agriculture has remained a crucial and constant supply of high-quality food and produce
Agri Aware chair Alan Jagoe said: “Agriculture has remained a crucial and constant supply of high-quality food and produce and those are all highlighted in our Dig In! resources for primary school.”
Minister Heydon said that many students might go on to be environmentalists, work as farmers or in the agri-food sector. What connects them is that they will all be consumers of Irish produce.
“Dig In! is therefore an important initiative that can help tie all these different elements together,” he added
