Tesco and Aldi grew sales by 3.4% over the period, compared with an increase of 0.4% for SuperValu. Dunnes Stores and Lidl increased sales by 2% and 2.7%, respectively.
SuperValu remains the largest grocery retailer in Ireland with 22.2% of the market share, but Tesco is now close behind at 22%.
“This is the fourth consecutive period of growth for Tesco, which is a clear indication that it’s achieved a turnaround in performance, said Kantar Worldpanel David Berry. “This is also only the second time since July 2014 that Tesco has posted a year-on-year increase in market share.”

The overall Irish grocery market grew by 2.2% despite prices falling 0.5% for the second month in a row.
Dunnes Stores continued to lose customers, but this was more than compensated by a €2 increase in the average checkout payment.
