Silage will be cut and baled at Shannon Airport on Friday 19 April to help farmers who are trying to deal with fodder shortages due to the prolonged spring.

The airport also brought forward their silage date to help farmers during the fodder crisis of 2013, making 1,600 bales for farmers.

Co-ops have been very good

It’s hoped that a similar number of bales will be made on the 400ac site this year.

Kerry Agribusiness has confirmed that they will be paying for transport costs and will put bales on account for suppliers who need them.

“Co-ops have been very good about carrying credit during the fodder crisis,” Clare IFA chair, Willie Hanrahan told the Irish Farmers Journal.

It’s estimated that contractors costs will be around €12/bale and silage will be sold at cost price to farmers.

It’s understood that demand for bales from local farmers will be satisfied first, and if there is surplus then bales will be made available to farmers in other counties.
