The Department of Agriculture has suspended Ballymahon Mart’s licence to trade after it breached COVID-19 protocols at last Thursday’s sale and gardaí were called.
The mart had been granted a licence to operate on Thursdays under the new COVID-19 restrictions subject to an agreed protocol.
All marts had to send a new operating procedure to the Department for approval which would show how they would comply with social distancing measures before they could trade stock again.
Breach
However, it was identified by Department officials that the mart had breached measures imposed under the protocol, a garda spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal.

“As a result, the mart was informed by the Department of Agriculture that its licence had been suspended.
“Gardaí attended Ballymahon Livestock Mart on Mostrim Road, Ballymahon, at approximately 12.30pm on 16 April, where individuals had gathered and were not adhering to social distancing.”
Mart cleared
“An Garda Síochána advised those gathered of their obligations under the COVID-19 measures and ensured that the mart was cleared as a result of the suspension of the licence by the Department of Agriculture.
“Those present complied with gardaí and no further action was necessary,” the spokesperson added.
Gardaí were not required to impose any legislation nor the new regulations during this matter.
Department
A Department spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal that gardaí assisted the Department, at the Department’s request, in enforcing the new COVID-19 restrictions at Ballymahon Mart last week.
“On foot of this incident the mart was subsequently notified by the Department of Agriculture that its licence had been suspended,” the spokesperson said.
