There is a real onus on the beef industry to shape up and engage properly with farmers, Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has said.
Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Minister Creed said that the beef talks were a wake-up call.
“If you look at weighing, if you look at carcase imaging, even progress on the grid. Things that have been lingering around the place for a long time… the overall conclusion is why weren’t these things given a long time ago?

“In particular meat industry need to work harder, at engaging as equals with their primary suppliers,” he said.
“The level of distrust and animosity was palpable. No industry can survive in long-term in that scenario,” he said.
Minister Creed said the Department will publish maximum and minimum cattle prices “as soon as is practically possible, I don’t see any reason why that would be delayed”.
