On Tuesday evening Animal Health Ireland (AHI) kicked off their weanling roadshow series for 2026 in Elphin Mart. They hare hosting four talks across the country over the next two-weeks. The series “Your Weanlings are Worth Their Weight in Gold” is support by AIB and targeted at preparing weanling for the upcoming sale season.

The next talk is taking place (tonight) 29th July in Carnaross Mart with Conor Quinn, Kinnegad Veterinary Center joining both Eilish Gill and Natascha Meunier of AHI for a discussion. The roadshow is moving south next week with Gortatlea Mart on Tuesday 4th of August with Ennis Mart hosting the event on Wednesday 5th of August.

The talks are not just targeted towards farmers selling weanling with good management practices for farmers both weaning and housing their own stock. Some of the topics to be covered are:

  • Pneumonia prevention.
  • Vaccination planning.
  • Parasite control and dung sampling.
  • Knowing calf weights for accurate dosing.
  • Pre-housing management.
  • Reducing stress at weaning and sale.
  • The talks are being organised by AHI with a number of different speakers at each event. John Gilmore of Emlagh Lodge Veterinary Centre offered farmers some on the ground and practical advice on best management practices at the first event held in Elphin Mart.
