Tuesday’s sale at Ballyjamesduff Mart saw a large entry of close to 576 head on offer, despite the time of year. Mart manager John Tevlin said that the numbers on offer are up on the same time last year and buyer activity remains quite strong.
The cow trade stood out, with some well-conformed heavy cows selling to a top price of €2.18/kg. Other good-quality heavy continental cows sold from €2.00/kg to €2.15/kg. Feeding cows sold mainly from €1.70/kg to €1.80/kg, with dairy-crosses, plainer and older cows sold from €1.50/kg to €1.60/kg.
The heifer trade saw strong demand for all good-quality types, while plainer heifers were a little more variable. At the top of the market, heavy heifers over 600kg were scarce and sold mainly from €2.15/kg to €2.45/kg or up to €800 to €870 over the weight. Those from 500kg to 600kg sold from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg with top-quality heifers making over €2.60/kg. Light stores from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg for average-quality types.

Heavy bullocks over 600kg sold from €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg, with forward stores from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg for continentals and from €1.70/kg to €1.80/kg for Friesians. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg sold from €2.10/kg to €2.60/kg with Friesian bullocks from €1.40/kg to €1.60/kg. Commission rates are €3 to €16 to the seller and €7.50 to €9 to the buyer.
