The live export trade for weanlings, store and finished cattle has started the year in a positive fashion, with exports to European destinations particularly strong.

The latest live export data published by Bord Bia shows 2,424 cattle exported to Spain up to 25 January 2025, representing an increase of over 2,300 head on the corresponding period in 2024.

The Italian market is also vibrant for weanlings and store cattle, with 1,138 cattle exported to 25 January 2025 compared with 317 head in 2024.

Momentum

Reports indicate that exports have maintained their strong momentum over the last fortnight, with both markets importing higher numbers.

Exports to Northern Ireland started the year strongly in 2024, but have surpassed this performance in 2025, with 2,290 head exported in the first weeks of 2025.

The 23% increase in export volumes is being driven by a vibrant beef trade and significant price differential presenting an opportunity for agents to import cattle and deliver a significant margin.

Buyers are especially active for top-quality cows and store or finished cattle destined for the wholesale market or to be slaughtered in abattoirs.
