The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) has sold a house in Dublin for €750,000 which it had seized from Kilkenny farmer Thomas McDonnell of Pollagh, Goresbridge.

The house, at 33 South Circular Road, Dublin 8, was sold by auction on 8 October 2025.

“The property was seized by the bureau on foot of its revenue enforcement powers following a 2013 revenue judgment for outstanding revenue liability in the sum of €4.9m against Thomas McDonnell from Pollagh, Goresbridge, County Kilkenny.

“This is one of a number of enforcement actions taken by the bureau against Mr McDonnell in pursuance of this debt. Enforcement actions are continuing,” CAB said.

Cattle seized

In 2017, a total of 125 cattle were seized from Mr McDonnell’s farm for unpaid taxes.

The action was taken on Tuesday 31 January 2017 by the “sheriff on behalf of the Criminal Assets Bureau” and it arose from a High Court judgment.

An Garda Síochána told the Irish Farmers Journal at the time that the tax liability “covers the years 1991/2 to 2006 (a total of 16 tax years) based on assessments made in 2008 giving rise to a tax liability of €1.2m (tax only)".

“Mr McDonnell failed to discharge his tax liability and, accordingly, the bureau commenced High Court Revenue proceedings for the collection of the unpaid taxes in November 2009.

“Mr McDonnell defended these proceedings with the assistance of solicitor and counsel. Ultimately, the bureau obtained judgment in May 2013 and has in the intervening period sought to collect the sums outstanding.”
