The introduction of the two new veterinary science courses in South East Technological University and Atlantic Technological University has resulted in a large 42% increase in students selecting Level 8 veterinary medicine as their first preference on this year’s CAO. However, the round one offers given for veterinary courses also increased by 115%.
Points for veterinary medicine were the highest in Atlantic Technological University at 647 points followed by University College Dublin at 589 points and South East Technological University at 566 points, according to the Central Applications Office (CAO).
Veterinary Level 7 and Level 6 courses also saw an increase of 33% as first preferences.
Decrease in agricultural science
Agricultural science first preferences for Level 8 courses were down 7% across the board. Level 7 and Level 6 agricultural science courses have also seen a drop in first preferences among students by 5%.
The CAO points required to study agriculture for Level 8 courses decreased across the board this year, with University College Cork being the highest at 478, followed by University College Dublin at 417 and University of Galway at 410. Dundalk Institute of Technology came in at 373 followed by South East Technological University at 368 points. Atlantic Technological University was at 320, followed by the lowest Technological University of the Shannon at 317.
