On 16 April, an electrical fire ignited at Carrick-on-Suir Mart, shutting down the mart and its offices.

The business is gearing up for demolition this week with a re-build proposed to restore it to its former glory.

With a 63-year history, the mart hopes to restore its customer base. Farmers and dealers have had to travel to Kilkenny and Thurles for their trade.

The roof has been removed in preparation for demolition.

A small amount of asbestos in the roofing has slowed down demolition, but the main works will begin this week.

An electrical fault meant it was very difficult to stop the fire at the time, but with the help of the fire brigade the blaze was stopped.

Ever since that day, plans have been put afoot to get the oldest mart in Ireland back up and running. Placed on the Kilkenny, Waterford and Tipperary county borders, the mart has been the meeting point for many farmers over the years and they eagerly away its return.
