Currently based in the Moorepark Food Research Centre, the Clare native is off to the world-renowned university to pursue his PhD in association with University College Cork, having completed a BSc in Genetics at UCC.

O’Donnell’s current research focuses on the effect lactobacillus has on human health through its impact on the gut mircobiota.

"I am honoured to receive such a prestigious award and to be part of such a high-achieving cohort of individuals," O'Donnell said."

As part of the Fulbright scholarship, trials will be conducted analysing the impact of lactobacillus on the gut, specifically the role it plays in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS can affect anyone and is mainly associated with dietary changes, stress and medication problems but is becoming more and more of a problem.

Speaking at the announcement, Shane O’Donnell was excited to receive the scholarship and the opportunities it will present him in his studies.

"I am thoroughly looking forward to continuing my research in Harvard and embracing every experience that this opportunity will bring," O'Donnel said.
