Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has announced that Ireland has gained access for the export of pigmeat to Mexico.

Minister Creed gave credit to the work of the Irish embassy in Mexico for all its hard work in securing access and said the achievement marked several years of work put in by his Department.

The country has a population of 120m people and imports 38% of its pork. Industry experts, such as Bord Bia, feel that the country could be very important for Irish pig farmers in the future.

The trade is also important in light of the recent EU-Mexico global agreement, which will help to reduce trade tariffs.
