Domestic milk intake increased by 50.4m litres in June this year compared with the same month in 2024.
That is according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), which estimated that 1.08bn litres of milk was taken in by processors and co-ops in June. This equates to a 4.9% rise on June 2024 and a 3.5% jump on June 2023.
From January to June this year, milk intake was estimated at 4.65bn litres, up 303.5m litres or 7%, when compared with the same period in 2024.
In the second quarter of 2025, an estimated 3.34bn litres was taken in, up 248.9m litres or 8.1%, compared with quarter two last year.
Meanwhile, looking back on 50 years of data, intake has more than doubled, increasing from 494.4m litres in June 1975.

Of the milk taken in, 26.3m litres was whole milk sales, while 13.5m litres was skimmed and semi-skimmed milk sales.
Fat content for June 2025 was 4.06%, which has risen from 4.01% last June. Protein content rose slightly to 3.45% in June 2025, compared with 3.43% a year earlier.
Skim milk powder increased over from 18,400t in June 2024 to 23,300t in June 2025.
In addition, there was 33,700t of butter taken in June, 2,500t more than in the same month last year.
