Irish consumers' grocery spend is set to exceed €1bn for the first time this month after the market grew by 2.9% in the 12 weeks to 2 December compared with the same period last year, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

Meanwhile, a similar basket of food and other grocery products has seen its price increase by 1% year on year.

Consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel Douglas Faughnan said Christmas falling on a Tuesday was expected to boost sales.

"We expect most households to do the bulk of their Christmas grocery shopping on the Saturday and Sunday – with extra sales on the Monday representing a welcome Christmas bonus for retailers,” he explained.

New Aldi stores

The market research firm reported 7% growth in sales at Aldi during the period.

"We have opened new stores in Blackrock, Co Dublin, Graiguenamanagh, Youghal, and Killaloe over the last month or so, making it even easier for customers to visit our stores,” said Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley.

Kantar said discount chains Aldi and Lidl both included more branded products to attract shoppers.

At the top of the league, Dunnes Stores retained the largest market share (22.4%), while SuperValu (21.7%) edged ahead of Tesco (21.6%).
