A native of Kilkenny, Mark Lynch was educated in CBS Kilkenny, went on to complete his B Agr Sc in UCD and then did his PhD in Cornell University, USA. Following a period of lecturing in UCD, he then joined the Department of Agriculture. There, he set up the pesticide control unit (PCS) in 1973 and headed it up until his retirement.

During that time, he played a leading role in establishing legislation and procedures at Irish and EU level to help protect food safety. Following the Vietnam War, he played an active role in helping to re-establish that country’s agriculture and food production systems. He was heavily involved with the OECD from 1997 in helping to establish a global approach to pesticide regulation.

Following his retirement in 2008, Mark continued to be involved in the sector to help ensure good pesticide practice. He became chair of the Irish Agricultural Supply Industry Standards (IASIS) and the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU Ireland). He was the voice of those industry sectors as they prepared for the local implementation of EU legislation.

His passions included all things Kilkenny, particularly hurling. He was also an avid rugby supporter, with a great love for music of all genres. And he also maintained a continuous interest in helping people. Mark has been described as a true gentleman, a mentor, a leader, a meticulous organiser, a legend and a man of great integrity.

He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary to his wife Maura last year and they have four children – Daire, Iseult, Mark and Michelle – and five grandchildren, who will miss him greatly.
