Sheep factories have been working at close to peak capacity in recent weeks to satisfy demand for the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha. Last week’s kill was recorded at 74,342 head, an increase of 6,779 head on the previous week. Many factories anticipate that this week’s kill will be similar. If this is the case it will be the highest two-week kill figure in well over a decade.

Prices are facing some pressure after a strong period, with prices quoted from €5.30/kg to €5.40/kg on average.

Throughput in Northern Irish factories is also at peak capacity, with 11,808 lambs and 292 ewes and rams handled in the last week. There was also a significant increase in numbers exported south for direct slaughter which were recorded at 11,096 head.
