The Scottish government has unveiled a £10m Sustainable Agriculture Capital Grant Scheme (SACGS) as part of a green recovery plan.

It is a pilot programme, running for five weeks, offering 50% grants of up to £20,000 for the purchase of equipment by farmers that will reduce carbon emissions and improve productivity.

However, the bulk of the green recovery fund is initially going to Scotland’s forestry sector.

Scottish Forestry will get £100m for new tree planting, with £30m to Forestry and Land Scotland to expand national forests. A further £20m million has been allocated to increase the supply of young trees.

Over 80% of all new woodland creation across the UK in 2019-2020 was in Scotland, and this further investment will increase planting to 18,000 hectares per year in 2024-2025.
