Gardaí in Tipperary have reported an increase in farm thefts in recent weeks with the latest involving a quad bike stolen from the Borrisoleigh area.

Inspector James White from Thurles garda station told the Irish Farmers Journal, three trailers and a quad have been stolen in the county within the past two weeks.

“We have seen a notable spike in farm thefts with a trailer and quad bike stolen from farms in the Borrisoleigh area earlier in the week. We are currently exploring the connection between the thefts, it’s likely the stolen trailer was used as a means to transport the quad.”

Suspicious sellers

White warned farmers to be wary if offered property from suspicious sellers and advised purchases only be made from recognised markets.

“Buying trailers from uncertain sources can support these trailer thefts. If we take away the market for the equipment we can reduce the motive for their theft.”

Trailer marking

Gardaí in Tipperary are reminding farmers of their equipment marking service which can aid in the recovery of stolen items.

White explained: “The best thing farmers can do to combat these thefts is to ensure their property is secure and to avail of the marking service. In the event of stolen property being recovered, marking will make returning these items a much quicker process.”
