Any money is certainly all wanted. I applied for the scheme last year and I will again. The cost of feed and fertiliser is so high and cattle prices aren’t getting higher so margins are getting tighter. Whatever money you can get, you should take.

Suckler cow numbers are on the slide and that will probably continue.

What you’re getting for the weanling is barely paying to keep the cow. And young lads now are going off on a job from 8am to 5pm and they get a week’s wages and no hassle.

Payments like this will help but every penny is needed.

Gerry Leonard – Athenry, Co Galway

It’s all the better to have something like this coming because, as it stands, there’s an awful lot of people getting out of suckler cows. It’s already gone down a lot.

You see a lot of rubbish stock in marts at present and we badly need to keep the quality of stock in the country up.

Christy Murphy – Athenry, Co Galway

It’s hard to know how much good the scheme will do because I think a lot of people are getting out of cows anyway. There are a lot of older men getting out.

When you look around the mart here today most men are over 60 and the rest of the marts around here are the same.

There are no young buyers and I really don’t think a scheme like this will make a difference.

Suckling is under threat but to be honest I think farming in general is under threat.

In the west, kids are too well educated and they are going working in good jobs. Who wants to be calving cows all weekend and at night?

Joe Greaney – Kilcolgan, Co Galway

I think it will be no harm, but lads who are going to get out of cows will probably still get out of them.

I applied for the first BEEP scheme and I found it beneficial – it was good to get it anyway.

I probably will apply for it this time again, although, there are so many schemes I get mixed up on them at times.
