Over 280 farmers and landowners are to benefit from the first phase of expansion to the Walks Scheme.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring has announced 10 new trails will be added in the first phase and the scheme will be doubled in size over the coming year.

Last year, €1.8m was paid to 1,962 farmers and landowners under the scheme which covered 39 trails.

This expansion reflects the success of the Walks Scheme to date

The 10 new trails will be located in counties Clare, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Sligo, Tipperary and Wicklow. They will run for a combined length of 500km.

Up to 30 additional trails will be added over the coming year.

Announcing the expansion of the scheme, Minister Ring said: “This expansion reflects the success of the Walks Scheme to date in delivering high-quality walking trails, and follows the Government’s commitment to double the number of trails in the scheme over time.”
