1. Fruit, vegetables and herbs

The ground has been very wet and cold, so there is no rush – wait until the soil dries.

Sow vegetable seeds indoors to gain some time, if possible.

On light soil, onion sets can be put in now. Potatoes can be planted at any time in good conditions. Spray apple trees against apple scab.

2. Trees, shrubs and Roses

The season is very late with no signs of bud-break. Evergreens, both broad-leaved and coniferous, can be planted from now on as the sap begins to rise and they will root quickly.

Bush roses and repeat-flowering climbers should be sprayed against blackspot disease.

3. Flowers

Gladiolus and dahlias can be planted directly outdoors from the middle of April. Wait for a while in the colder localities.

Lilies can also be potted up for summer flowers. It is really too late to sow bedding flowers because they will flower very late. Wait and buy plants in May.

4. Lawn

Lawns are generally in a bad state and need feeding soon, in most cases. Mowing is delayed but should be carried out. Use lawn mosskiller if there is heavy moss growth.

If new areas are to be sown, the ground should be cultivated, if possible, and it’s best to wait for soil conditions to improve.

5. Greenhouse and house plants

Feed and heavily water all greenhouse plants, if not already done. During the next three weeks or so, sow sweet corn and runner beans for planting out at the end of May.

Check for the presence of insect pests as there are no natural predators in a greenhouse.
