The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) and Bord Gáis Energy have launched an online calculator that lets farmers estimate how much they could save by installing solar panels on their farm buildings.

It comes as the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has increased its non-domestic microgeneration grant for solar PV from about 23% to 45% of eligible costs, for nine months from 6 October.

The IFA said it has lobbied hard for increased funding for farm rooftop solar, raising the issue with Government in the run-up to Budget 2027 and directly with the Taoiseach and Tánaiste.

"Farmers want to generate their own power, but the cost has been a barrier since ranking and selection was introduced in TAMS,” IFA president Francie Gorman stated.

“[The] IFA lobbied the Government hard for a better grant and the increase to 45% is a real step forward. I encourage every farmer who is thinking about solar to use the calculator, get a survey and quote and price their project now while the higher rate is available."

Application

The SEAI grant is a direct application, with no ranking or tranche wait.

Farmers should also check with their accountant how accelerated capital allowances may apply to their investment.

The 45% SEAI rate remains below the 60% available under the TAMS Solar Capital Investment Scheme. However, only one in 10 TAMS solar applications are currently being approved.

"The clock is ticking on the 45% rate. If farmers are considering solar, now is the time to apply. We will continue to lobby for increased funding and an extension of the SEAI grant, but I urge farmers not to let this opportunity pass them by in the meantime,” IFA energy from farms project team chair Maurice Brady said.

“[The] IFA and Bord Gáis Energy have a tailored solar offering for farmers. To date, we have successfully installed hundreds of systems on farm rooftops around Ireland,” IFA director of organisation James Kelly commented.

“To see which grant and solar system could be right for you and your farm business, call 0818 989 498 or visit ifa.ie/solar.”

The online calculator can be accessed here.
