The IFA is set to make a case for crisis aid for tillage farmers badly affected by the bad weather in 2016. This comes following the devastating consequences which bad weather had on growers in specific parts of the country in particular.

Deputy president of the IFA, Richard Kennedy, along with grain chairman, Liam Dunne, will lead a delegation to Brussels to press the case for an EU aid package. The move follows a series of regional meetings with growers to assess the impact of the severe weather. This information will be presented to EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan on Friday.

These severe weather conditions are rare (hopefully) and the yield situation was compounded by low prices.

The result is a serious income situation on these farms, which requires a strong response at government and EU level according to Liam Dunne. Otherwise, a number of grain farmers will face financial ruin, he said, as many crops were almost entirely wiped out.
