In response to IFA livestock chair Angus Woods at the recent meeting of the Beef Forum, Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has said he was very willing to sit down with the IFA to work through how proposals can be brought forward to increase supports for the suckler herd. Fodder scheme

The Department of Agriculture has confirmed to the IFA that any part of the county with a fodder deficit will be included in the transport scheme, once Teagasc verifies it. Padraic Joyce, Connacht regional chair, said confusion over the scheme continues and the minister needs to convene an immediate meeting of the Fodder Action Group, so that all stakeholders can discuss how the scheme will work in practice.

With applications for BPS, the Young Farmers’ Scheme and the National Reserve now open and online applications required, IFA deputy president Richard Kennedy is urging farmers to make an application as early as possible and if they experience any difficulties to make contact with the Department of Agriculture. He said it is important that the Department provides assistance to farmers in difficulty. The closing date for BPS applications in 2018 is Tuesday 15 May.
