IFA president Francie Gorman vowed on Tuesday that the association would remain camped out at Bord Bia until the chair of the State agency Larry Murrin is removed from his position.
Earlier on Tuesday, a number of IFA members entered the Bord Bia building to escalate the protest action.
A number of protesters are expected to remain inside the building through the night. Gardaí are present at the building.
Bord Bia said that the move by farmers to enter the building was carried out under false pretences and that farmers refused to go when asked to leave.
“To be clear from the word go, this is not somewhere we wanted to be,” Gorman told farmers on Tuesday night.
Action
Speaking into a microphone outside of the Bord Bia offices to protestors within the building, he said the IFA is carrying out this action as it’s what its members on the ground want.
“This is a ground-driven campaign to get rid of the chairman because there’s no confidence in him.
“We want a resolution to this, that’s why we’re here,” he said, adding that protesters inside the building have the “backing of every farmer in the country”.
'Disrespect'
“Farmers that should be at home looking after their cows, looking after their farms at the busiest time of the year… and the way that we’re being disrespected by Bord Bia, by this chairman, by the minister is not good enough and we are not going away until we get a resolution,” he said.
He told protesters in the building to be aware of the staff in Bord Bia.
“I’m a director of this place and I totally respect the staff that work in Bord Bia,” he said.
Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon has called on the IFA to de-escalate the protest action. He said that Larry Murrin has his full backing as chair.
