The weather forecast says that it will remain cold throughout Wednesday, with frost, ice and lying snow lingering in some regions. There will be further wintry showers across parts of the southwest, west and north, but these will tend to become increasingly isolated later. It's expected to be very cold Wednesday night. Frost will set in quickly after dark, becoming severe, with fairly widespread ice. Mist and fog will form also, with some freezing fog in places. Becoming breezy and rather cloudy later, which should help to clear some of the fog and also reduce the ice over the southern half of the country. Some heavy rain will develop over Munster before dawn, with sleet or hill snow in places. Lowest temperatures -2 to -4 degrees.
Around six to seven inches fell in Donegal and Derry last night, with heavier snow on higher ground. Temperatures are barely about freezing, so a few problems for those commuting or working with livestock.
