At the minute: “I farm with my father Anthony and my brothers Tony and Declan. I’m more of a weekend farmer at the moment with work during the week. My sister Mary is married and farms at the other side of Donegal and my other sister Megan is in Perth on a construction site. There is about 120ac owned and 20ac rented land on the farm.”

Pedigrees: “We have about 40 pedigree Charolais cows. Daddy also bought two Angus cows last year from the Mogeely herd in Cork. Daddy does all of the AI on the farm, we don’t have any stock bulls. We put a Limousin on the heifers for their first year because it’s easier calving. We keep most of the Charolais heifers and mainly sell the bulls between 14 to 18 months. We are very lucky to have returning customers and a lot of them get sold at home, if not they go to Tullamore, the Christmas cracker in Elphin or to Raphoe in March time.”

Sheep: “We have about 100 sheep lambing every year as well, there’s a mix of Charollais, Suffolk, Texel and some Belclare in there as well.”

New Zealand: “I went over to New Zealand last November to do wool handling in the shearing sheds for Kirkpatrick Shearing. I was basically sorting the wool and finding the bad bits. It was class out there. You’re up at half four for work and not finished until quarter past four in the afternoon, it’s a long day but it’s different when the sun is shining.”

Lambing: “I came home from New Zealand in March and we start lambing at home around St Patrick’s Day so I got home for the brunt of it. I would be a big lover of lambing time.”

Off-farm job: “I’m working as a GP receptionist in Inishowen Medical. I’ve worked there for the last eight years. I also have a degree in veterinary nursing.”

Showing: “Its coming up to summer show time now and that’s what I live for. Its a big family thing in our house. I got more into it when I was about 16. I am also secretary for the Donegal Charolais Breeders Club. The club is doing a show on 13 of June in the Ballybofey and Stranorlar mart, so that will be the start of it now. It’s one of my favourite times of the year.”
