Boortmalt has confirmed an increase in the maximum distilling barley protein content to 9.5%.

This follows on from a previous increase declared at 9.2% earlier in the year.

Boormalt has also confirmed rising its top protein price for brewing to 12% in agreement with Diageo.

The move is believed to be in response to what appears to be higher protein levels in the 2018 crop.

Both decisions will be welcomed by farmers, but it is still unknown if the higher thresholds will be sufficient to enable the bulk of barley to meet the required specifications.

The green price for malting barley at today’s MATIF price level stands at €204.25, a significantly higher price compared with the same period last year.
