The Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association has proposed that 10m native Irish trees be planted on farmland to represent the 10m people that have been born since the formation of the Irish State in 1922.

The trees would be planted in corners of fields or along margins.

Biodiversity

INHFA spokesperson Vincent Roddy said it would deliver in terms of climate change and biodiversity while also celebrating the last 100 years.

He said the proposal could be included as an action in any future REPS.

On Friday, the INHFA will host its AGM, with Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and Prof Alice Stanton set to address the event, which will be livestreamed for members.
