DEAR SIR: I write both as a farmer and a postal sorter at the Portlaoise mails centre in response to your article on lost BVD tags in the 6 April edition. I wish to refute in the strongest possible terms the assertion made in the article that BVD sample tags were “littering” the floor of the PMC. This is simply not true.
I would advise farmers if they are posting envelopes containing small numbers of tags that it would be of benefit to bulk up the envelope with something as simple as some tissue paper. This would help to ensure they are diverted away from mechanical sorting machines to a manual handling area where the prospect of damage or loss is practically eliminated. Trusting this may be of some assistance.
