Planning process for pig unit
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council are beginning a fresh round of consultations on a proposed pig breeding unit near Limavady.
The original plans for the unit off Moys Road were submitted at the end of last year, but the planning department determined that the proposal could have a significant environmental effect.
An environmental statement was then submitted within six months by the applicant, so that the process could continue.
The farmer, Thomas John Simpson, is proposing to build a 2,247-sow unit on an 8.5ac site. He is working in conjunction with nine other farmers, who will be supplied with pigs from the unit at 30kg liveweight for growing and fattening. The finished pigs will be supplied to Karro Food Group in Cookstown.
