EXPERIENCE the New Year’s Day Arrow Ceremony at Hook Lighthouse, Wexford on 1 January at 1pm. This is a centuries old tradition in which the Dunbrody Archers and the Chairman of New Ross Council will participate. The tradition dates back to 1687 when the Mayor and New Ross Town Council claimed their authority over the tower and waters by travelling to the Hook and shooting an arrow into the sea. The Mayor will cast an arrow into the sea symbolising the port’s authority over the estuary. Members of the public are welcome to come and watch the free event. MARVEL at the Wonderlights at Palmerstown House Estate, Co Kildare from 27 December until 4 January. Back by popular demand after the autumn show, Wonderlights is a 2km track tucked into the woodlands adjacent to the manor. It is lit up with 12 metre beaming figures including woodland creatures and Irish folklore heroes, a water feature and light displays. ENJOY the Enchanted Garden Winter Light Festival in Tramore, Co Waterford until 5 January. This event is now in its fourth year. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens hosts it and it opens up from 5pm to 8pm every evening. Adults and children are mesmerised by the light displays which culminate in a visit to the Winter Fairy who lives in a glowing Dome on the Pond.
