Maighread Barron

Maighread started farming full-time in 2018, taking a long-term lease of 15 years. Her farm is a dairy farm consisting of 100 acres of grassland. She runs a 90-cow herd, comprising British Friesian cows and some crossbred breeds. Outside of farming, she plays football with the local team and loves to run, completing half-marathons last year. She is also a member of her local Macra club, Dungarvan.

Cathal Conaty

Cathal’s family-run farm enterprise is a stored beef enterprise. Cathal works part-time on his farm as he is working on a two-year master’s degree programme with Teagasc. The farm buys in store cattle and store lambs to finish off. The family also has a slaughterhouse, where the animals are processed. The processed animals are taken to local butchers and sold directly to customers. Cathal is a member of his local Macra club, Newbliss.

Outside of farming, he is in an amateur boxing club and carries out water safety lessons.

Joe Melody

Joe is farming in partnership with his father, with dairy as their main enterprise over 40ha. They run a purebred cattle breeding operation with 170 suckler cows and 60 dairy cows. The farm also breeds pedigree bulls for sales and shows. Joe is involved with his local agricultural show committee and shows pedigree cattle during summer shows. He loves politics and public speaking in both business and agriculture.

David Fogarty

David manages the dairy element of Willie Jordan and Sarah Keogh’s farming enterprise based in Wexford and Kilkenny. The farm has a 202ha milking platform where he milks 475 crossbred cows that are fed on a grass-based system. David is also involved with the breeding and vaccination of the heifers on the farm. Outside of farming, David is involved in his local Macra club, Cushinstown, and his local GAA club. He also enjoys reading and loves to see the country.

Dara Killeen

Dara Killeen is a dairy farmer from Co Galway. After finishing his studies in 2012, Dara returned home to farm. He is a new entrant into the dairy industry. In 2017, he started to explore the dairy sector and began to phase out his sheep enterprise. He is currently milking 153 cows off a milking platform of 115 acres. In total, he is farming 300 acres. Outside of farming, Dara plays hurling and football for his local club.
