The recent Teagasc survey on small farms shows the need for a coordinated Government response to address farm viability, IFA deputy president Richard Kennedy has said. Small farms play an important role in the rural economy and society; it is critical that action is undertaken to improve their economic sustainability and to deliver off-farm employment and upskilling opportunities.
Dairy prices
IFA dairy chair Sean O’Leary has said it is clear that markets remain strong and continued strong prices for butterfat and cheese especially justify further milk price increases to Irish farmers. Last week’s three-point jump in the Ornua PPI shows that Irish trading contracts are catching up with the stronger EU MMO and spot price reports. Continued price increases by co-ops are justified.
Smart farming
The Smart Farming Progress Report 2017 was launched this week. The Smart Farming initiative works with farmers to identify ways to improve returns on their farm while enhancing the environment. The report shows Smart Farming worked with farmers to identify cost savings of €8,700 on average per farm, as well as ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10%.
