Farm businesses across NI that have not opted in to the Beef Carbon Reduction (BCR) Scheme are encouraged to do so before the 31 December deadline to secure payments for eligible animals slaughtered in 2025.

The scheme, part of DAERA’s Sustainable Agriculture Programme, incentivises farmers to reduce the age at slaughter for clean beef cattle to improve efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Businesses that opt in will receive £75/eligible animal, with the maximum slaughter age set at 28 months for 2025, reducing to 27 months in 2026.

Opting in is quick and simple via the DAERA website, requiring only a tick-box confirmation. Once enrolled, businesses remain in the scheme for its four-year duration.

There are no penalties if a farm has no qualifying animals in a given year. Farmers who sold cattle through a livestock market but retained them for at least 60 days within the final 100 days before slaughter, may also qualify and should opt in.
