The pens were full at Pomeroy last Thursday evening, where there was a good selection of heavy stores along with some weanlings that are beginning to make their way to market.

The ringside was packed too, with plenty of people actively bidding, while others freely admitted they were just there for a run out. The sale started with two freshly calved Friesian heifers making £2,310 and £2,460.

All classes of stock were in demand with a batch of older dairy-bred Simmentals making between 300p/kg and 330p/kg.

Plenty of heavy cattle broke the 400p/kg barrier, including a 720kg Charolais male that made £2,990 (415p/kg).

He was closely followed by two other Charolais males that both weighed 670kg and fetched £2,710 (404p/kg) and £2,680 (400p/kg).

The top price per kilo was 557p/kg for a 280kg, one year old Charolais heifer that sold for £1,560. Another top price was a March 2025 Charolais bull that weighed 300kg and made £1,620 (537p/kg).

Cattle in the 500kg to 600 kg range were generally trading from 340p/kg for plainer lots, while those with better conformation and growth potential hit over 430p/kg. Stock over 600kg generally traded between 380 to 420p/kg reflecting more consistent quality as well as a more limited supply of heavier cattle being on offer.

Pomeroy mart is run by Richard Beattie Livestock Sales, with the cattle sale taking place every Thursday from 7.30pm.
