Plans are being progressed within DAERA for a new farm grant scheme, with the aim of launching it before the end of 2025.

Brenda Cunning from DAERA said money for the new grant will come from outside the NI agriculture budget, so it will not be funded by cutting existing farm payments.

She told MLAs that the estimated cost of the new Sustainable Farming Investment Scheme is £40m and it will be rolled out over “two or three rounds”.

Each farm will have a maximum claim of £25,000, which will provide up to 40% funding for eligible items that have an environmental benefit.

While low emission slurry spreading equipment (LESSE) will be given priority, Cunning said DAERA is looking at “a wide range of equipment and technology” for the new scheme.

“We want a broader approach, so we have items that will be applicable right across the board for all sectors [and] for all farm sizes,” she said.

The list of items that will be eligible for grant support is still being finalised and DAERA is currently in contact with equipment suppliers to get reference prices for each item.
