Microsoft founder and the world’s richest man Bill Gates is investing in a research project to improve the health and production of livestock in third world countries along with the University of Edinburgh.

Gates is investing $40m (£28m) in the Edinburgh-based charity the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed), via the charity he runs with his wife.

UK International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt and Bill Gates unveiled a plaque to formally launch the University’s Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security, a £35 million research and teaching initiative focused on safeguarding the future of the world’s food supplies

The Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health aims to build on the gains that have been made in UK farming from animal genetics and selective breeding to sustainably improve livestock productivity and resilience in developing countries.

The Centre is a partnership between The Roslin Institute, Scotland’s Rural College and the International Livestock Research Institute based in Kenya and Ethiopia.
