The farm: “We have about 300 acres in all, there are 160 acres of links, about 100 of arable and there’s some rough grazing. We don’t rent any ground.”

Stock: “We have about 60 Aberdeen Angus cows, plus we usually keep about another 10 heifers, so we are calving between 60 and 70. The main aim is producing commercial, breeding Aberdeen Angus bulls. We sell between 10 and 12 bulls each year. Most are sold off the farm, but we also usually make an annual trip down to the Stirling bull sales.”

This week: “We’ve been tidying up the silage. We have 15 acres of arable silage which we’ve just finished and baled, and 24 acres of grass silage, which was a second cut. We have tried using arable crops this year when reseeding to stop the sand blowing along the fence lines, as the ground is so sandy here, and the crop helps keep it and the grass seed in place. Despite setting aside more ground for silage this year our yields are about two thirds of what they normally are.”

Best bit of kit: “It has to be the tractor, it’s on the go all the time, especially in winter.”

Quotable quote: “I think they [Aberdeen Angus] tick all the boxes from birth right through to going on the plate, as far as I’m concerned. We calve them outside in the winter on the links, and I’m not sure there would be many breeds that would put up with that.”
