We farm: “77ha of land along the motorway just outside Cashel. Land type could be described as very good with good ability for early turnout.”

Family: “I farm with my wife Audrey and my two daughters Estelle and Alyssa.”

Dairy switch: “We were dairy farming up until 2007 but the new motorway split our farm and we changed over to suckling. I enjoyed dairying, but after 35 years milking cows for myself, it was time for a change.”

Cattle: “We keep 100 suckler cows and sell the bull calves as weanlings. We generally finish any of the heifers that we don’t keep for breeding. There is a lot of negative talk around suckling at the moment, but many people don’t have a choice, so they just have to stick at it and roll with the punches.”

Autumn calving: “We run an autumn calving system. I really like the autumn calving; no scours and we generally have very little hassle with them at calving.”

Breed: “I have all Limousin cows and run a small pedigree Limousin herd. I don’t really bother going to shows and sales and I sell a lot of bulls at the house to repeat customers. I run the pedigrees like commercials and I think they are better ready for work when they are sold. I like the Limousin for their vigour and their hardiness. I put a big emphasis on docility and easy calving and I generally don’t have any problems.”

Charity: “I’m completing a skydive in aid of Pieta House on 28 September at the Edenderry Parachute Club. My daughter Estelle is also doing it, along with Jack Ryan and Adam Woods from the Irish Farmers Journal. We wanted to do something for charity and we felt this was a really good cause. People can donate by contacting myself on 087 2703619 or logging in to our GoFundme page at www.gofundme.com.”

Quotable quote: “They say you should do something every once in a while that scares you. Our skydive will have me in credit for scares for quite a while.”
