Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated last weekend that Canada will begin intense discussions with the EU to build a much stronger and deeper economic and security partnership.

It comes on the back of the latest trade tribulations with the Trump administration in the US.

Carney has previously dismissed speculation about Canadian membership of the EU, but he has also described Canada as the most European of non-European countries.

There are almost eight million native French speakers there and the French territory of St Pierre and Miquelon is only 20km off shore, so there could be a tightening of relations and it will be interesting to see how agriculture and food fare in these talks.
